Assigning 100 math problems won't fix anything if they’re too easy or exactly the same. Here’s why we need to rethink how we assign practice.
There's this stubborn myth that if a kid is struggling, you just need to throw a massive pile of worksheets at them. More volume equals better grades, right?
Wrong. Doing the same thing 100 times doesn't help if you're doing it wrong, or if it's so easy that you aren't actually thinking anymore. Practice is everything, but the *quality* of that practice matters way more than the sheer volume.
Real improvement only happens when you're working right at the edge of your abilities. If the questions are too easy, the kid gets bored and checks out. If they're absurdly hard, they get frustrated and give up.
The sweet spot is a concept called the Zone of Proximal Development. It's that tiny window where a problem is just hard enough to make them stretch, but not so hard that it breaks them.
This is exactly why printing a standard worksheet for 50 kids is a fundamentally flawed approach. For 15 kids, it's way too easy. For 15 kids, it's a nightmare. It only actually hits the 'sweet spot' for a handful of them.
To get real results, every single student needs a dynamic set of problems. If a student breezes through basic kinematics, the next question shouldn't be another basic one—it should throw friction into the mix to push them forward.
